Lucien Gaillard Art Nouveau Pendant ‘Ivy’
The gold in this beautiful 18-carat-gold pendant has a soft finish. The ivy leaves are coloured in various shades of brown in high gloss enamel. The ivy berries are represented by pearls. The centre of the pendant, with its triangular design, is set with a larger pearl. There is a teardrop pearl at the bottom. The original chain has long links, with a square cross-section.
Lucien Gaillard (Paris 1861-1942), who made this sophisticated pendant, joined his father’s workshop when he was seventeen. He was the fourth generation of the family to become a goldsmith. In 1892-93 he succeeded his father as head of the house of Gaillard fils. Like his father, Ernest, Lucien Gaillard was captivated by the craft and investigated every conceivable technique, producing fascinating results. Signed L. Gaillard and marked with the French content mark for 18-carat gold.
