The Herengracht in Amsterdam
This stretch of Herengracht was made to scale from a print by Caspar Jacobsz Philips dating from around 1770. The silver miniatures were all made in Amsterdam in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and present a picture of everyday activities on Amsterdam’s canals in that period. The rare coach and barouche were made by Arnoldus van Geffen 1734 and 1754; the fisherman by Jan Breda around 1700; the lamplighter bears the makers’ mark ‘a bunch of grapes’ and was made around 1680 ; the pig on a ladder by Pieter van Somerwil around 1730.
