A Middelburg Wine Cooler
This impressive Louis XVI style wine cooler was made by Hendrik Boshart in Middelburg in 1783. The oval cooler stands on an openwork foot ring with a beaded edge at the top. Around the bottom of the body of the cooler there is an engraved border of stylized acanthus leaves. Around the centre is a raised band with a ribbon engraving of rosettes. Above it on each long side is an engraved garland. The upper rim is in the form of a staggered fence. The striking and unusual handles are each composed of two intertwined snakes.
