A Pair of Arnhem Sauce Boats
Arnhem silver is extraordinarily rare. Few of the town’s residents could afford domestic silver, so it was only ever a very minor silver centre in the Netherlands. This pair of sauce boats, which were made there, stand on an oval reeded foot ring. The plain oval bowl-shaped body has two handles on the long sides composed of C-shaped ornaments and a pouring lip on each of the short sides.
Both sauce boats are fully hallmarked on the underside with the Arnhem assay mark, the silver content mark HOL, the date letter X for 1748 and the maker’s mark DC above a line for Daniel Courou.
