A Delft Wine Taster

This silver tasting bowl was made in 1707 by the Delft silversmith Adriaen Joosten Brandt.

A tasting bowl is a tool for wine-tasting. In earlier times it was used by winemakers to control and taste the wine at different stages of the production process. By pouring wine into the bowl and "rolling" it, oxygen was added to the wine, which made the aroma of the wine smell better. Finally, the wine was tasted from the bowl.

This rare and early specimen from our collection is shown in the recently published catalogue Delft Silver by Dr. Pieter Biesboer (cat.nr. 68 p. 252). In this substantial standard work you can read all about Delft gold- and silversmiths and their marks between 1536-1807.
The accompanying exhibition is worth a visit. Check here for the specs.
