A Large Basket

Dutch silver baskets are generally made in three different sizes. This basket by Hermanus Heuvel is of the largest. The oval basket has a curved upstanding sides which are pierced and engraved with trellis work, decorated with rosettes and bordered at the top and bottom by a rim of ovals connected by beads. The scalloped top edge runs down the centre of each side where a bow with an oval medallion underneath is attached. Around it are moulded hanging laurel garlands suspended from rings. The top edge flows smoothly into the curved handles, composed of a ribbed band with a rocaille ornament in the centre. The basket stands on four rocaille-shaped legs.
