A Tobacco Box by a Female Silversmith

This tobacco box was made by one of the few female silversmiths working in Amsterdam, Hendrina Das (Leiden, 1691 - Amsterdam,1758). She was the sister of Jacobus Das; both were specialist in making engraved silver tobacco boxes and silver snuffboxes.

This box with engraved sailing ships was made by Hendrina in Amsterdam around 1740 .The rectangular box has chamfered corners and completely smooth sides with a profiled rim along the bottom and top edges. Engraved on the lid is a depiction of three ships at sea framed by an engraved piping.

Hallmarked on the inside on the bottom with the city hallmark of Amsterdam and the makers' mark a three-leaf clover for Hendrina Das. The lid also bears the same hallmark.
