A Pair of Candlesticks

These candlesticks are a wonderful example of the Louis XIV style in one of its most lavish forms. Especially in Amsterdam, this style developed in an exuberant manner unparalleled in other Dutch cities. Wealthy merchants from the capital flaunted their status to reinforce their position. This can be seen in the design and the use of various cast ornaments in these candlesticks.
The candlesticks stand on four cast feet with a facemask on top. Over the profiled foot rim, lambrequins are applied between the feet. Shell ornaments can be seen above the masks on the feet and on the candle holders. The square, baluster-shaped stem has an oval rosette on each side in the centre of a matted field.
The candlesticks are both fully hallmarked at the bottom with the Amsterdam city mark, the Dutch lion, the year letter of 1737 and the makers' mark of Hans Rinckes.
