This oval tobacco box, made in Rotterdam in 1720 by Johannes Immerzeel, is engraved on the lid with the Biblical representation on the way to Emmaus (Luke 24:26). The text engraved around it reads: En moete de Christus niet deze dingen lijden Om alsoo integaan in Zijn Heerlijkheid verblijven.
A biblical scene is also engraved on the underside: Jesus appearing to St Mary (John 20:15). The text around it reads: When Mary looked at her Lord with fearful weeping, he appeared to her unafraid, like a gardener.
The inside of the lid engraved with a baker in his bakery, probably the commissioner of this box.
Hallmarked on the inside on the bottom with the city hallmark of Rotterdam, the Dutch lion, the date letter K for 1720 and the makers' mark a ship for Johannes Immerzeel.
