A Set of Four Middelburg Candlesticks

This festive set of four candlesticks is a fine example of the graceful and elegant Dutch Rococo style. Although there are a few known sets of this design that were made in The Hague, it is exceptionally rare to find a set of four from Middelburg.

The candlesticks stand on a round, fluted, bell-shaped base which curves upwards in a spiralling motion towards the node, which is also asymmetrical. The baluster-shaped stem of the candlesticks is adorned with rocaille ornamentation and flows smoothly into the candle holder. The detachable bobeches feature leaf motifs.
All candlesticks are marked on the outside of the base with the Middelburg city mark, the date letter G for 1770 and the maker’s mark—a bird on a branch (unidentified master).
They are also marked with the tax mark U from 1795.
