This elegant gold ring is set with a lively combination of foiled-back oval gemstones, including fire opal, amethyst, emerald, garnet and sapphire. The mix of contrasting yet balanced colours is characteristic of the harlequin style, a fashion that emerged in the late 18th century for jewels set with a variety of coloured stones.
So-called harlequin jewels were named after the colourful costume of the commedia dell’arte character and became popular for their joyful play of colour and light. They appeared in necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings, appealing to a taste for variety and refinement during the Georgian period (1714-1830).
This ring, with its vivid arrangement of gemstones, is an early and particularly fine example of the type. Its design, now often imitated in modern jewellery, has survived in excellent condition.
