A Pair of Groninger Candle Sticks

This early and elegant pair of candlesticks has a square, profiled base with beveled corners.
The base has a recessed circular field on which a baluster shaped stem stands. On top of the stem is a round, profiled candle holder. The base is engraved with the coat of arms of Johan Wichers and Clara Alting who married in Groningen in 1698.

The candlesticks were made in 1717 by the well known Groninger silversmith Johannes Dronrijp. He was born around 1660 in Visvliet, the son of silversmith Regnerus Andreas Dronrijp and Ettjen Hillebrants Ardingius. From 1689 he worked as a master silversmith in Groningen and in 1699 he was sworn in to the city. He married Afrelia Treccius in the Dutch Reformed Church of Groningen in 1690 and Anna Helena Busch in 1699, with whom he had two children. He died in 1726 or 1729.
