Miniature Skates

And... have you been ice-skating these past few days? Unfortunately the frost period already seems to be over. Did you know that our winters used to be so severe and long lasting that even the salt water of the Zuiderzee and the Waddenzee froze? You could travel across these frozen waters by horse-drawn sleigh or on skates, from Friesland to Hoorn or Enkhuizen for example. People brought back souvenirs of these special trips across the ice, often made of silver. Who knows, these antique silver miniature skates might also have been such a souvenir. They were made in Enkhuizen in 1737. Aren’t these a nice memory of these few but wonderful cold days…...
